Tell us about yourself and what you do for a living?
I am a Hairdresser and the Director of a boutique hair salon in Surry Hills, Sydney, called Vandermeer Hair. I have a long history styling hair for fashion weeks, industry events and editorial shoots, and looking after beautiful brides (represented by The Future Mrs Agency). Recently I have launched an online store that focuses on promoting hair wellness from the inside out.
What does a typical morning look like for you?
Starting the morning with intention and routine is very important to me. Waking up at 6:15 AM, I begin my day with hot lemon water, followed by yoga or reformer pilates at my favourite studio OneHotYoga (Covid has affected this), rounded off by a Vedic meditation at home. Then, I have a cold shower whilst listening to a certain song that shan't be named (but also, it's Suddenly I See by KT Tunstall. Don't judge!). For me, the cold shower is a mental challenge that pushes me beyond my limits, not to mention the physical health benefits. After all of this, I am ready to start my day!
Do you have any special rituals that you commit to daily?
SO MANY. I am very much into rituals. Everyday I put on my essential oil diffuser and burn palo santo sticks or sage. I read an affirmation, which I also send to a group of close girlfriends. COFFEEEEEE – this is good for the soul and I love supporting my local coffee shop. Journaling and putting a pen to paper is everything. I write a to-do list every morning, and every evening I write in my gratitude journal to reflect on the day.
What is your version of self-care?
Self-care is choosing to do things that nourish my soul, allow me to feel fulfilled, and rest my busy mind. Sometimes that might be getting outside for some fresh air, a walk, a podcast and some sunshine. Also, my pilates and yoga is essential. For me, self-care is also having a wine and a laugh with a girlfriend while watching the sunset, or simply cleaning the absolute daylights out of my apartment and redecorating.
Current morning skincare routine:
It’s very simple and I never skip it. I gently cleanse, apply a serum, and finish with an SPF moisturiser. I drink my CILK Rose extract whilst doing this.
Your go-to makeup look?
I always look natural. I apply a skin tint with a brush, I sweep bronzer across my cheeks, bridge of nose and top of forehead. I fill in the gaps of my brows using a pencil and brush them up with a clear brow gel. I finish off by curling my lashes and using mascara. I always spray my perfume when I finish my make-up.
Your top 3 makeup products that are currently on high rotation?
Bare Minerals Complexion Rescue Tinted Moisturiser – a game changing, breathable product that looks like skin.
Hourglass Unlocked Instant Extensions Mascara – if you haven’t used tubular mascara and are sick of panda eyes, LOOK THIS UP ASAP!
Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz – for effortlessly easy brows.
Most under-rated beauty tip?
Apply products to the skin in an upwards motion, use a Gua Sha daily, and use Eco Tan Organic Face Water if needed (gamechanger if you’re pale like me).
How does wellness play a role in your approach to beauty?
My approach to beauty is very mindful. I believe that every decision we make can impact the way we look and feel. I have built my business brand around promoting hair wellness from the inside out. Beauty is much more than just a product or service – it's a lifestyle. A healthy, confident body is always beautiful. If we look after ourselves physically, mentally, spiritually and emotionally, we feel amazing and others pick up on this energy.
Best beauty advice you ever received:
Basically everything I was told and chose to ignore in my late teens. “Natural is best; Don’t over-pluck your brows; Stop with the eyeliner”. Wash your pillowcases and make up brushes frequently. Less is more.
What beauty products do you always carry with you/ in your handbag?
Le Labo Santal 33 roll on perfume oil, deodorant and lip balm.
