Waking up with Yen Hoang

When I first met Yen, she was managing the M.A.C store in Sydney's CBD. I was so extremely lucky to call and book in for a make-up appointment the day before a friends wedding (which was unheard of pre-COVID). The minute that Yen sat me down, I felt safe, heard and that I was in great hands. Eight years on, Yen has been my go-to Sydney based make-up artist and I am so grateful that she was able to do my make-up on the day of my recent wedding. Over the years Yen has built up an impressive clientele of both Sydney and L.A based celebrities and talent, including Victoria Villarroel, Zoë Foster Blake and Caroline Vreeland just to name a few). We sat down with Yen to disect what a typical morning looks like for her. Read on to find out more.

What does a typical morning look like for you?

As a freelancer, my mornings depend on my work schedule for the day. Each day is always different so I find it hard to have a routine. We are currently in a nationwide COVID-19 lock down, and to help me stay focused and motivated I have adopted the ‘5AM club’ approach. Wake up at 5AM, go for a walk, meditate, read and then tackle my working day. (It’s only been 2weeks and so far it’s been great. Let’s see how long I’ll last!)

Do you have any special rituals that you commit to daily?

Morning ritual without fail! I drink a glass of warm lemon water first thing in the morning on an empty stomach. I find it helps cleanse my body internally and gets the digestive system moving.

What is your version of self-care?

I have learnt to listen to my mind, body and not burn myself out. Understanding that it’s okay to say no to allow myself time to reset and re energise. Regular exercise and eating healthy food (love me some greens- broccoli and spinach!) Quality time with family and friends to switch off from work and just having some alone time is important too. #ZENYEN

Current morning skincare routine:

I like to start my morning skincare with a clean slate. I am currently trialling the ‘FRESH soy face cleanser’ and loving it! It is very light and gentle on the skin, leaving it fresh (not dry!) and cleansed. Then hydrate my skin by mixing a few drops of Go-To Face Hero Oil with Weleda Skin Food (Light). Followed by the essential, SPF! Oh and can’t forget my good old must-have Lanolips. Pretty simple. Right?

If my skin is feeling a bit puffy and dull from a ‘not so good’ night’s sleep (aka NETFLIX binge!) Straight to the fridge I go. I whip out a sheet mask and my Aceology ice globes for a bit of SOS.

Your go-to makeup look?

On a day to day basis you would probably see me with little to no makeup (depending if time is on my side). When time is, I like to keep my makeup fresh and minimal but enhancing my features- ‘the no makeup makeup look’.  Sheer foundation base, curled lashes to help open my eyes and mascara for a bit of definition, cream blush and highlighter, and tinted lip balm. But when a special occasion arises and depending on mood, most likely you will find me in a bold red lip or brown smokey eye and lashes - the whole shebang!

Your top 3 makeup products that are currently on high rotation?

Lanolips, Go-To Face Hero Oil, Mecca Save SPF. For colder months of the year and during lockdown, it’s been all about focusing on skin care and health.

Most under-rated beauty tip?

Beauty starts from within.

How does wellness play a role in your approach to beauty?

I truly believe that ‘beauty starts from within (internal). I always (try) to get a solid 8hr sleep. Even when I have ridiculous 4AM starts, I will be in bed by 7PM. Having a well- balanced diet filled with lots of fruits, vegetables (lots of greens), seeds, protein as well as drinking plenty of water through the day - it’s okay to indulge with a cheeky chocolate or spicy margarita here and there. I love a cup of green tea after my afternoon meal too! All of this plays a big role in maintaining my overall skin and body’s health.

What beauty products do you always carry with you/ in your handbag?

Hand cream, minimum 3 lip products currently have (Lanolips, Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask, Mecca Lip De-Luscious - Rose) Lash glue, Hollywood Tape, Bobby pins.
